Why mammography guidance may be chosen
Small calcium deposits, called calcifications, are one reason for this approach. Their appearance and distribution help determine whether sampling is needed. Ultrasound guidance may not be suitable if the target is not clearly visible on ultrasound.
What to expect
The breast is positioned and held still while images guide sampling. Local anaesthetic is used. A marker may be placed to identify the sampled site for future imaging. Ask the team how you will be positioned and tell them about any difficulty lying still.
Before the appointment
Bring the original mammogram images as well as the report. Tell the team about pregnancy, allergies, medicines and any bleeding problems. Do not stop prescribed medication without instructions from the treating team.

After sampling

Does a recommendation for biopsy mean cancer?
No. The purpose of sampling is to establish what the imaging finding represents.
Is stereotactic biopsy the same as ultrasound-guided biopsy?
Both use images to guide sampling, but stereotactic biopsy uses mammography and ultrasound-guided biopsy uses ultrasound. The target determines the suitable method.
