When MRI may help
MRI may be recommended for selected high-risk screening, further evaluation or assessment of implants. It complements other breast imaging; it does not routinely replace a mammogram or ultrasound.
Contrast and the reason for your scan
Many diagnostic breast MRI examinations use intravenous contrast. An examination focused on implant integrity may use a different protocol. Tell the team the exact reason for the referral so the correct examination is arranged.
Information the MRI team needs
Mention pregnancy, kidney problems, previous contrast reactions, implanted devices and metal in your body. Bring any device identification card. If enclosed spaces make you anxious, discuss this before the day of the scan.
Preparing for your MRI appointment
Bring earlier breast images and reports, operation details and relevant biopsy results. Ask the team about preparation specific to your examination, including any timing instructions.
